I\u2019ll be the first to admit I\u2019m no bike mechanic, but there is some basic maintenance<\/a> you absolutely need to learn if you\u2019re going to keep your motorcycle in good working order and keep yourself safe on the road. It\u2019s important to carry out some basic checks on your bike before each ride as well as to generally pay attention to what your bike is telling you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s right, your motorbike will speak<\/em> to you, and it\u2019s important that you listen. Strange noises (like whistling or grinding) and odd vibrations can all be trying to warn us that our bike may have an impending problem, and it\u2019s good to take heed of them to save bigger issues down the line. The more you ride your bike, the better you\u2019ll know it, and you\u2019ll start to get a sense of what\u2019s normal for your machine and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warming Up and Pre-Ride Checks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Allow the bike to warm up for at least 30 seconds before you pull off. Engine oil will sit at the bottom of a cold motorcycle, so this warm-up time will help get it stirring and lubricating<\/a> any moving parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do a quick check on the condition of your tyres. Keep your manual handy so you can check the correct tread depth and tyre pressure for your bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s always good to quickly check that your lights and brakes are working correctly too before setting off on a ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liquids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The engine, brakes, clutch, steering and cooling system all require liquids and oils to help lubricate<\/a> them or provide pressure to the bike \u2013 and it\u2019s important to stay on top of them. Your manual will explain where these reservoirs are and how to top them up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, always do a quick brake test before setting off on any ride. It\u2019s also good practice to do a more thorough check of your brakes regularly. Once you\u2019ve checked your brake fluid levels you should also check the pads themselves for any signs of being worn down. If you suspect this to be the case, it\u2019s absolutely vital to replace them. For this you may prefer to take the bike down to your local garage or, if you\u2019re feeling up to the task, break out your manual and try replacing them yourself. Just make sure to test them before you ride!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air Filters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When learning how to be your own bike mechanic, cleaning your air filter is a great place to start. Dirty air filters reduce performance and must be cleaned or replaced. To clean, remove the filter, wash it with kerosene, ensure it has dried and then coat with a light layer of engine oil. General Checks and Good Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you notice any loose bolts or screws<\/a> while inspecting your motorcycle, be sure to give them a tighten.
